Supporters of a plan to allow slot machines at Nebraska horseracing tracks told a legislative committee the idea could save the racing industry in Nebraska.

Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber proposed a constitutional amendment to allow 3500 video slot machines at Nebraska racetracks. Some of the money made by the slots would go the state roads department.

The Legislature's General Affairs Committee listened to supporters and opponents at Monday's public hearing on the proposed amendment, and a companion bill outlining how expanded gambling would work.

Opponents said the proposal is a "bailout" for the racing industry that Nebraskans have rejected in the past.

I hate when the news only tells one side of the story.Horse racing is very much alive way of gambling and this is not a bail-out. You anti-people don't realize how many people would be effected If horse racing would die in Neb.It would effect not only the personnel and the horsemen but also all the Hay farmers ,motels, restaurants, convince stores, farming stores to even Coops.Basically, the backbone of Nebraska. It would be like taking out a small Nebraska town. There is over 2500 people that would be out of a jobs. Lets face it, Gambling is already here in Neb between lotteries pickle cards and keno. Its not like slots would be much worse than that.Besides,a good percentage of the slot money would be going to the Neb roads and not one single penny would be going to Vegas anyhow.Every penny would be put back in to Neb. Iowa is already getting way to much of our Neb money.I think its about time we keep some of the money on this side of the river and have slots benefit us Nebraskans.

Maybe instead of taxing cigs and alcohol, we should start taxing all the churchs in Neb. I wonder if the choice was between taxing all the churchs or allowing slot machines which would win? Nebraska's taxes are just getting out of hand. We have to find ways to pay for our states overspending without having to raise taxes. Its time to start cutting gov spending or find new ways of funding. Again... tax the churchs or allow slots... Kinda makes ya wonder how they would argue this choice...

No to the slots! Let horse racing die- it's a horrible sport for horses. We have no right to use animals for our entertainment. Let's be the example here in Nebraska.
