As the weather starts to warm up, one Lincoln couple is on a mission to educate as many children and parents about the importance of water safety.
Last June a family gathering turned tragic for Blake and Kathy Collingsworth. Their two-year-old son Joshua was found unconscious in the backyard pool. He died three days later from complications of drowning. Blake says they had all the safety precautions in place, including a fence, pool cover and a security camera. However, he now realizes parents often overlook teaching their children about water dangers.
"What I believe we want to start pressing is you always tell them to look both ways when crossing the street, don't talk to strangers, hold onto the hand rail while going up and down the stairs. But when it comes to water you think you'll always be there with them so you don't give the warnings that you really need to stay away from it," said Blake.
As part of an effort to keep the memory of their son alive, the couple has created the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation. Through the foundation, his parents have written a children's book and song to promote water safety. It is based on a baby otter named after their son.
In addition to these efforts, the couple has teamed up with the "Face up First" program which teaches infants how to stay afloat with their face up.
Blake and Kathy say they hope to eventually spread the program across the state and the Midwest.
