The father of an 18-year-old who received questionable care at the Beatrice State Developmental Center before dying is angry about the state's handling of the case.
David Manes of Steinauer says he's "destroyed" because he has learned about the care his daughter received from watching the news, not from state officials. Manes says the staff at the center treated his daughter Olivia like loving parents. But he blames the state for staff shortages and other problems that have undermined the center that is home to developmentally disabled people.
State officials say they were sorry Manes learned of the circumstances surrounding his daughter's death from the media.
Olivia Manes' death prompted the state's chief medical officer to order 35 to 40 residents of the center who are medically fragile to be moved to hospitals.
