Lincoln Police are reviewing surveillance video, looking for a man they said is responsible for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. They have captured images of the suspect from the video surveillance inside the Git 'N Split at 2801 O Street.
Police said the girl was walking Northbound to a friend's house, toward 27th and N streets, around one o'clock Saturday afternoon, when a man she didn't know approached her.
Police said the man struck up a conversation with the 14-year-old girl and they talked for a few minutes but when she tried to leave, the man pulled her behind a closed office building at 140 south 27th street.
There, police say he sexually assaulted the young girl in a stairwell.
Officer Katie Flood says the man didn't have a weapon.
"This was all force in the use of fear. He did threaten that if she screamed, he would hurt her," said Flood.
Flood says after the attack, the man let the girl go. She continued on to her friends house, where together they contacted an adult friend who called police.
Police have increased concern over the location of the attack. It's just a few blocks from Elliot Elementary school. You can see the building where the assault happened, from the school. Even closer is the Lighthouse -- a non-profit after school program for kids in grades six through 12.
Kevin Bell, Volunteer Coordinator at the Lighthouse says they have on average, 60 some kids coming through their door each day. Bell said he's shocked the assault happened so close and in broad daylight.
"We will definitely stress to the kids that they need to be aware and if they see anything suspicious to report that to the police or to us, especially with this person still out there," said Bell.
With so many children coming through the Lighthouse each day, and
mostly in evening hours, Bell said they stress for their kids to use the buddy system when walking to and from locations.
Flood says the assault is an isolated incident and one the department hopes it doesn't see continue.
"I think a crime of this nature is probably a woman's worst fear," said Flood.
Police are searching for a black man in his 20s, around 5' 8" to 5' 9", weighing around 170 pounds.
They said the man has short hair, and was last seen wearing a red jacket with blue accents and jeans.
The man was last seen walking on foot toward 28th and O streets.
Flood said there are some things to remember when walking alone.
"I think to avoid a situation like this, try to not walk alone. Even though it was broad daylight, walk with a friend, walk with a family member, always be aware, do not leave with a stranger, do whatever you can to grab attention," said Flood.
The 14-year-old girl was taken to a local hospital for an exam.
