Legislative bills seeking to curb illegal immigration brought an overflow crowd to the state Capitol today.

The legislature's Judiciary Committee heard testimony on two bills.

The first, LB34, sponsored by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha, would require employers to verify their employees are legal citizens.

The other, LB403, carried by Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber, would require local agencies to verify the legal status of anyone trying to get public benefits like food stamps, unemployment and retirement.

A measure some supporters say is of increased significance given the current economy.

"In this recessive economy, don't believe it's fair for illegals to compete with citizens for social and medical services," said Doug Kagan, with Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom.

But others see the bill as "anti-Latino" says the bill boils down to

"I would like to believe that in 2009, that this state and this nation had matured to the point that we no longer have to condone these acts and it should be time to cease and desists," said Sam Franco, who is a first generation United States citizen, born to immigrant parents.

Karpisek assured fellow senators and others at the hearing that the bill wouldn't keep children of illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition rates.

It's a change from a similar bill from Gov. Dave Heineman that dies last year.

"This isn't a got ya, or check for deportation. It's a way to save money on benefits for illegal persons," said Karpisek.

Under the proposed law, immigrants wouldn't have to verify citizenship for emergency healthcare, immunizations for diseases, or for services at soup kitchens and shelters.

Whether the bill will die is unknown but the heat surrounding immigration legislation is sure to live on.

Karpisek says immigrants applying for public benefits would fill out a form claiming whether they are a legal citizen or not. The information would then be verified by the Department of Homeland Security.

If someone claims to be a citizen, the information is valid until proven otherwise.

Also, state agencies providing benefits would have to complete an annual report detailing the number of applications each year, and of those, how many were rejected based on citizenship.

So immigrants are legal residents. But that's isn't the same thing as illegalaliens. Illegal laiens are criminal parasites. Immigrants are welcome beneficial and helpful to society regardless of their race. Being pro illegal alien is like being pro-rape and pro-crime. Of course people in the US government don't even bother to pay their taxes until they have to hold out their hands to grab more power. Why should any of us follow any laws at all. Maybe we should just have a free for all. I wonder what the bushies or Obama's would think if their child were raped or injured by some drunken illegal alien like what happens to the 25,000 other Americans who die at the hands of drunken illegal aliens every year? Oh that's right they live in bubbles and are surrounded by the best security the people can buy for them. No need to get their hands dirty while we suffer...

The immigration law is aimed all illegal immigrants whether they are from Europe, Asia, or Africa. The Latinos need to stop thinking they are the target. If your here legally, you are not a target. If you think you are being targeted, maybe its because you know your breaking the immigration laws that are in place for this country. Come here the legal way, it will all work out, if anyone comes here the illegal way, then of course there should be consequences. Its also a fact that 40% of Federal offenders in this country are Hispanic, due to the fact of the recent crackdowns on illegal immigration. I'm truly sorry, but it is fact, that this ethnic group is the largest group of violaters for entering this country illegally, and the buck needs to stop here an now.

"Confused", if Jesus showed up at my door I'd be terrified that zombies have taken over the planet.

Lee~~it's already happening here in Lincoln NE. Had a 62 yr old friend who had lung cancer, less than 6 months to live tried to get onto housing to help her out; they told her it was an 18 month waiting list. So for her paying her taxes and being a united states citizen, and others who are not and have umpteen kids, no daddies for their babies, and speak no enlgish, get help first before she does. Needless to say, she never made it the 6 months, it was more like 3 months. How do you explain this?

Making citizen checks is a good idea there may come a day when myself or a member of my family needs those services and they will not exsist due to misuse of services that were put in place for americans and paid for leagally by citizens of THESE UNITED STATES.

Can someone explain to me what an illegal alien is? If Jesus appear at your door would he be considered an illegal alien?

Nowhere in this article is anyone quoted as saying that only Latino illegal aliens would be targeted. I do believe the bill is for ALL illegal aliens. Why do the Latinos say others are racist when they themselves are the one who constantly bring attention to the Latino illegals. for the most part, I can assure our Latino illegal aliens that we don't want ANY illegal alien here. Personally I find no problem with any state wanting to have in place measures that guarantee only U.S. citizen receive U.S. benefits.

As Sen. Ashford admitted during the hearing, E-Verify is a system that contains a percentage of error that translates into millions of inaccuracies. I ask readers, would you like to rely on such a system next time you apply for a job or any kind of public benefit? In addition, I would like to point out that public benefits recipients are already checked for many (and I mean many) eligibility factors including immigration status. Once again, I ask readers, go and try to submit an application for public benefits (welfare etc.) and see for yourself how detailed the application forms are. I challenge you to try to apply for a public benefit without proper immigration status--you will not get far. This proposed bill is redundant and expensive to implement.

I applaud both of these Senators for bringing forward legislation that I believe a majority of LEGAL citizens have been waiting for. I just wish the rest of the country would follow.. Anyone who is here illegally should not be getting any of these tax payer supplied benefits.. Illegals continue to be a huge drain on this country and until legislation like this becomes the norm, it will not get any better...

In Feb 2004, Congress put out that there were 12 Mill Illegals. For the next 5 years, it stayed 12 Mill. Even during the 2008 Comp Reform debate, DEMOCRATS were saying 12 Mill. This is BS. NOBODY knows how many. We know for a fact, as DHS released the reports, that 4.5 Mill came in in 2007 and 3 Mill came in in 2008. The idea was that they were coming in expecting Amnesty in those two years. There are NO published numbers for 2004, 2005, and 2006. And NO records compiled on the approximately 600,000 Anchor babies just in those three years. And this is from a FRACTION of the Hospital reports for 2004-2006, with just a few for the last two years because it has now been OUTLAWED to make those reports public. You figure out why. Point is, we DON'T know the true number, OR the true economical impact of Illegal Immigration. As long as Dems are in power, we will NEVER know until they are legalized. Family Unification is a possible 126 for each new citizen. Hillary attempted that amendment

The problem is that factories bring the immigrants in on Employment Authorization Forms 765's; these are only good for 1 year. When the year is up most of the time half of these immigrants that they brought here don't work for them anymore, so then they are lost in the system per say. What needs to happen is that that someone needs to follow up with these people who don't renew their 765's to continue to work here. Once they are here and get their 765 cards, then they need to start the legal paperwork to become legal citizens. This is a huge issue and we don't even have enough jobs to support the americans that live here, let alone support and employ illegal immigrants who are here.

I heartily agree with these Legislative Bills, LB34 and LB403 and I would also like to see Federal action requiring both parents of chidren born in the U. S. to be legal United States Citizens before their chidren could automatically be legal citizens.

Proof of citizenship should be a given, especially if people are in the US illegally. This isn't about racism, and to claim it is, is condoning breaking the law.
