A proposal to protect pets from harm when a victim of domestic abuse files for a protection order has failed in the Nebraska Legislature.

State Senator Amanda McGill of Lincoln had said the bill (LB83) was meant to help someone decide to leave an abusive partner without fear a pet would be harmed in retribution.

Senator Arnie Stuthman of Platte Center was concerned the bill could be applied to cattle and other livestock. McGill agreed to amend the bill to change the term "domestic animal" to "household pet."

However, senators voted 24-18 in favor of the bill, which was one short of the 25 needed for it to advance. Seven senators were not present.

Pet abuse is a terible thing. But this bill was stupid. We in Lincoln have animal control 95% of the rest of the state does not. The Sheriff's Offices do it . they don't have the time , money , or the resources to cater to our ideocies.

I REALLY THINK THAT THE PROTECTION ORDERS FOR PETS SHOULD APPLY TO ALL ANIMAL AS AN ABUSIVE PERSON CAN HARM ANYONE OR ANTHING

Protection orders are worse than worthless anyway. First, you have to give the other person your home and workplace address, etc, on the order, so it actually helps them find you! Second, no piece of paper ever stopped a bullet, knife, or fist. Third, they give a very false sense of security.

That is sad this bill didn't pass. Other states have it, we need it too! Pets need protection from abusive people because sometimes it's an innocent puppy or kitten that can't fully protect itself from being stabbed or kicked so hard it pushes ribs into vital organs.
