Parts of northern Nebraska are seeing a mix of rain and freezing rain as winter makes a return, following a brief period of spring-like temperatures.
Freezing rain fell Thursday morning north of Norfolk, prompting some schools to start classes late. Showers and thunderstorms were reported a little farther south, and the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Colfax and Platte counties.
The weather service also issued a winter weather advisory until 3 p.m. Thursday for areas of northeast Nebraska. A winter front is expected to drop sleet, freezing rain and possibly snow in the area.
The blast of winter follows temperatures that had hovered around 60 degrees earlier in the week.
