Lincoln residents can soon say goodbye to potholes. Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler announced a plan Tuesday to use federal stimulus money to cure many of the problems Lincoln drivers face daily, bad roads.

"The streets we build today are the foundation of tomorrow's growth... these streets, like S 56th Street, NW 1st Street, Adams, and Van Dorn, are critical to Lincoln's future," Beutler said.

Mayor Beutler says the city's plan will use $9.3 million in federal funds, and $6.9 million in local money from the Arterial Rehabilitation Fund.

"I'm announcing an important step towards that future by dedicating over $16 million to reconstruction and rehabilitation of the streets that we drive on everyday," Beutler said.

The Director of Public Works and Utilities Greg MacLean says there's no better time than now to improve Lincoln's roads, especially busy ones like O Street.

"This particular section of road you can see how over the years the concrete street has deteriorated. We have some concrete patches, where we've done some joint repair, this particular section we have some potholes where we've done some winter repair with cold mix. We actually have some potholes that have formed on the edges of some prior repairs that we have done," explained MacLean.

President of Constructors Incorporated Randy Howard says the stimulus money was intended to create jobs, but at his company it will help his workers keep theirs.

"We're not going to be in a position where we're going to have to go out and hire new people. I think the thing it's going to be able to do for us in our business is maintain full employment for the people that we have," Howard said.

Mayor Beutler says the plan will resurface 310 blocks of roads throughout the city that are in poor condition, and the work will be completed between 2009 and 2010.
