Two more cities are joining the list of Nebraska municipalities that charge local sales and use taxes of 1.5 percent.

The additions of Benkelman and Monroe on April 1 will bring the total to 67 cities.

State Tax Commissioner Douglas Ewald says seven cities will begin charging 1 percent local sales and use taxes that same day. They are Chambers, Chester, Crofton, Daykin, Doniphan, Mullen and West Point.

Their additions bring the total to 112 cities with a 1 percent local tax.

The state says three cities and one county charge a half percent.

The state charges 5.5 percent.

The department says use taxes are due from purchasers only when sales taxes have not been collected by sellers on a taxable transaction in the state.
