Hundreds of Nebraskans chanted no taxation without representation in protest of increased government spending spawned by the stimulus bill at the state capitol Saturday

The tea party style protest is intended to mimic Revolutionary War era protests where citizens believed they were being unfairly taxed.

But instead of throwing bags of tea in the water, protestors at today's rally brought cans of pork and beans to symbolize their unhappiness with pork barrell spending.

Protestors say elected officials aren't listening to their concerns and the massive spending plans enacted by the government place an unfair tax on Americans.

"They don't seem to listen when folks are saying no we need to stop doing this. So that's why people want to send a message and get together," said Shelli Dawdy, a grassroots organizer of today's protest.

Dawdy said protests like this are occuring all over the country in preparation of a July 4th protest in Chicago.

I would find the tea parties a lot more impressive if our party would have organized them under Bush. He turned a surplus into massive deficits. The current state of the Republican party is why I have washed my hands of them and I'm holding out for a viable third party.

I am sick and tired of watching our elected officials throw billions of tax dollars at pork projects and the eroding of our individual freedoms. I did not elect Obama or any of the people he has appointed. This has been going on for years, Obama has just increased the spending and debt many times over previous levels in his short time in office. I want to be able to look my children in the eye and tell them at least I took a stand against this and tried to secure their future. That is why I attended the Tea Party tonight and will continue to support this cause. God Bless America!

Taxation without representation? We have no representation and our taxes simply fall into the pockets of those who pay their kickbacks to our so called representitives who are in it for themselves. Why do you think they have passed laws to remove them from having accountability. We need a revolution! Our own Government has become the terrorists and the president is the new Hitler.

You morons who think just because there is a warm body in the seat that it means we have "representation" are delusion! Protest rarely work, but just the fact that Conservatives are doing something proves that there is a real problem with our government. It doesn't matter what side of the isle you are on, you can't deny that the govt. has over-stepped it's boundaries in many areas and the current regimes attempts to fix it actually look like they want the whole system to collapse under hyper inflation. I know, I am just another radical extremist...with my gun and my Bible....

The problem we have is that our elected officials are NOT representing us. I challenge everyone to point out a real statesmen. Who among our elected officials is really working for our interests instead of their own re-election?

you people really need to quit believing whatever anyone in your chosen party tells you to believe, and start using the brain that has been allowed to atrophy through your selling of your own belief system to a group of politicians who have done everything to keep the status quo for the past 30 years. the tea parties are a joke, having absolutely no correlation to the intentions of the founding fathers with the Boston Tea party for reasons outlined by Gregory. and Jack, yes, it will have to be paid for but that is easier to do when health care isn't strangling the government, energy costs aren't driving people from their homes, and education is affordable and possible for everyone in this country. it is the theory that states you pay for improvements now, as the costs will only get greater in the future and we need a dramatic change in the way this country works in order to thrive in the new millennium instead of sacrificing our future to big business who care nothing for the citizens

in Washington DC, about 600,000 people are living and paying taxes to a United States government that does not allow them to elect representatives to congress. The 1.8 million Nebraskans are very much represented in congress. There’s Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, Rep. Lee Terry, and Rep. Adrian M. Smith in the House of Represenatives along with Senators Ben Nelson and Mike Johanns. Indeed, with a mere 0.6 percent of the nation’s population, Nebraska gets to elect fully 2 percent of the Senators. If anything, Nebraskans have taxation with overrepresentation.

The July 4 protests on a "Learn the Constitution" theme will be national, not just in Chicago. Note that although politicians may attend such events, they are often asked not to be speakers. This is about ordinary people speaking out, not party leaders.
