Phelps County officials have charged a 59-year-old woman with embezzling $700,000 from the irrigation company where she was the bookkeeper for 28 years.

The Phelps County Attorney charged Teresa Erickson of Atlanta, Nebraska with stealing from Charles Sargent Irrigation of Holdrege. Officials believe the thefts occurred between December 1999 and October 2008 when Erickson left the job.

A company audit uncovered the missing funds last fall. Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol, the Attorney General's office and the Phelps County attorney's office worked together on the case.

Erickson faces 15 counts of felony theft.
