Kyle Michaelis, a blogger at the Democratic-leaning New Nebraska Network, is "teed off" at the "Tea Party" protesters.

"There is very real element of selective outrage in the tea parties, as well as manufactured outrage," Michaelis said.

Michaelis said while he understands the tax protesters' concerns over the recent rescue plans and rising deficit, he questions why the protesters decided now is the time to oppose growing government spending.

"The bailout of Wall St. was signed by President Bush correcting years of deregulation that were led by the Republican Congress," Michaelis said. "Now suddenly out of nowhere they've taken this huge concern, when for eight years under President Bush, six of those this a Republican Congress, that wasn't much of a concern at all."

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson shared a similar sentiment.

"I wonder if they're putting something in their tea other than sugar," Nelson said. "I wish they'd been there eight years ago when the last administration doubled the national debt and increased the deficit. Where were these people then? It would have been helpful if they would have been pounding on the door of the White House at that point in time."

Michaelis called the protesters nay-sayers who offer few alternatives to the bailouts.

"They don't offer any actual solutions to the problems they actually created," Michaelis said. "They just know that they don't like what they're seeing now."

In the end, Michaelis applauded the disagreements because he said it's all a part of a democratically elected government - something the original "Tea Party" protesters were fighting for all along.

Democrats, like Michaelis and Nelson, attacked the "Tea Parties" calling them "AstroTurf," or an imitation grass roots movement manufactured by conservatives. They also point out a difference between the 2009 "Tea Parties" and the Boston Tea Party saying the colonists of 1773 lacked the right to vote and protested in outrage, while this year's demonstrations are in response to the Republicans' disagreements with the democratically elected President Barack Obama.

Tea party opponents also say the irony of these protests is that federal revenues as a share of the Gross Domestic Product, will be lower this year than any year since 1950. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the federal government will take only 15.5-percent of GDP in taxes this year, compared to 17.7-percent last year, 18.8-percent in 2007 and 20.9-percent in 2000.

All of you hypocrites on this page(Jesse, Ron, Patricia to name a few)...if you are so opposed to the stimulus plan and spending all of this money, where is the outrage towards Gov. Heineman for accepting this money for our state? If this is such 'dirty' money then why does nobody have any problem with our state accepting it? I'll bet there won't be this many upset people when their street in front of their house finally gets fixed as a direct result of this stimulus money.

Where is your "constructive" arguement Mike? Of course I am sure you must be plum tickled that trillions of dollars of our money has been blown into this socialists agenda and you are probably happy about it since you will no doubt benefit from this stupid spending as you probably do not even work for a living and I am probably paying your mortgage!!!

Wow, Nelson really ticked me off in this interview! How can he represent a Red State! He worked hard and was a front man in pushing the Stimulous Bill through! He is just as red-handed as the rest of the Democrats and Obama that pushed it through...if not more so! I will remember Nelson and be very active AGAINST HIM in all future elections! I'm tired of whiney Democrats forcing their views on us, while we work hard to support their stupid programs for all the irresponsible people. Now that they have finally overstep their authority and get us angery, they insult us by saying we are just a small group doing a little pointless whining. They must really think that Americans are stupid or that they are sooo much smarter than the rest of us. I can't wait to cast my votes AGAINST Democrats next year!!!!! Throw em all out, put in term limits, and get the FAIR TAX. Let's bring our country back!

If Senator Nelson is disturbed by the debt being doubled and the deficit increased, how can he be comfortable voting for spending plans that multiply them again? I think people understand there is a substantial difference between deficits of $500 billion and $1.75 trillion. Kyle Michaelis joins Nelson in suggesting the gatherings were not truly grassroots but rather a product of an "AstroTurf" operation. Have they attacked President Obama's chief political operative, David Axelrod, for his creation of that tactic? Are they embarrassed by the way it was used in support of President Obama's candidacy? The level of hypocrisy in those charges, coordinated and orchestrated as they are by political functionaries on the Left, is breathtaking even for someone as partisan as Mr. Michaelis, let alone someone normally sensible like Senator Nelson. Shame on you Senator for abandoning your principles on something as important as yesterday's gatherings, which many of your constituents support.

Democrats continue to whine & snivel, just as they always have. This is typical of libs attempting to down play the message of patriotic Americans standing up for the U.S.; You are gone in 2010 democrats, and you know it!

I couldn't agree more. Where were they the past eight years when our country was being decimated? This whole thing is manufactured by the Republican party and the protesters are being used. What else is new?

We were there, Senator Nelson. I e-mailed you about Bush's first stimulus bill in opposition to it. You know, the one YOU signed. Michaelis is an idiot. He can't defend Obama's plan, so he just goes back to the "but but but..Bush did it too" garbage. Tell us, why is Obama's tax plan so much better? That's right he can't... Hit piece after hit piece. We have you libs scared and we know it.

I believe that Senator Nelson, who backed the expansion of SCHIP, worked to make the "Stimulus" Bill pass and now is acting so dismissive and mocking of the angst and anger by those who attend the tea parties, is playing political suicide in a mostly conservative state like that of the great state of Nebraska. Senator Nelson has been a great proponent of what Nebraska is and worked for his constituents in the past, but maybe he's been in Washington too long, and maybe he has started to care more of what his friends in the Federal Government care about more than his constituents, whom he is supposed to represent here in Nebraska.

Mr. Michaelis, apparently you haven't heard, but this president has spent more in the last twelve weeks than all of the past presidents combined. We are also smart enough to know if you quadruple a trillion dollars and then promise to halve it the end result is 2 trillion. And that's if he lives up to his promis of "cutting" it. No real cut, just big unsustainable porking debt.

the Dems (Nelson, etc)are blinded by the so called "change" they need to wake up and get with what's best for NE. Don't matter, next election he'll get booted! I didn't vote for him.
Posted by: David Location: Omaha on Apr 15, 2009 at 10:13 PM

We on the right have no need to AstroTurf like those on the Left. And we did attack Bush, but why then did you elect Bush III into office? I thought you wanted Change, but it is the exact same policies continuing. Say goodbye to your Senate seat in 2010, Nelson. Your done.
