In the first 5 Nebraska Heartland Honor Flights, 750 World War II veterans got to visit Washington, D.C. On Thursday and Friday, that total will double. Friday's trip will be the final flight made from Nebraska and joining in on the grand finale will be veterans Roland and Reggie Dobson.

The brothers from Cedar Rapids, Nebraska are looking forward to seeing the World War II Memorial. Reggie and Roland have lived their whole lives in Boone County. After their time in the military they were in the farming business around Cedar Rapids.

Roland is 90-years-old and he entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1940. After he arrived in New Guinea, he learned an important lesson right away, "When you're in combat you pick out a true friend from a friend. There's a lot of difference between a true friend and a friend." As a member of the 35th Squadron, Roland was a maintenance engineer. One of his most vivid memories involved working on Charles Lindbergh's P-38, "He flew our plane 2 times in actual combat. I met him, we just shook hands, that was the most important man I met in my life."

89-year-old Reggie is Roland's younger brother. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and after basic training in San Diego, he and his buddies thought they were going to be sent to the South Pacific, instead they went north to the frigid Aleutian Islands, "He winds up there can get up to a 160, 170 miles an hour. Everything we did we had to have holes dug. All you'd see is the top part of the tent otherwise it'd blow away."

Reggie says it was an honor to represent Nebraska and serve his country, "I'm proud of it, I'm really proud of it."

Now, 65 years after he finished his service in the Army, Reggie is looking forward to the Honor Flight to finally see the WWII Memorial, "I think we'll enjoy it real good. I'd like to see it, they say it's really something to see and I'd really enjoy it I think."

The Dobson brothers will be in Omaha early Friday morning to set out on their long-awaited journey to Washington, D.C.

Dad, I know how much seeing Pearl Harbor meant to you, and I know you will enjoy seeing the memorial in Washington DC as well. You and Rollie deserve this trip, and there are so many of us that truly appreciate your fine service to our country. And as your daughter, I couldn't be more proud!! I love you, and have a very special and safe trip. I will see you when you get back! Julie
