The FBI says a plot to blow up NFL stadiums was a hoax. The FBI says they've questioned a 20-year old man from Wisconsin, and they say the plot was nothing more than an Internet prank. Although it turned out to be a hoax, this recent bomb prank leaves many stadiums on alert. Here at home, UNL Police have beefed up security at Memorial Stadium this season through a grant funded by Homeland Security. This Saturday marks the Huskers fifth home game this season, and the fifth game with new security procedures in place at Memorial Stadium. Metal detectors, mobile security cameras, and a new P. A. system are all part of the heightened security. Captain Carl Oestmann with University Police says so far it's going smoothly and fans are cooperating.
"They understand the importance of it," says Oestmann.
Oestmann says the metal detectors have helped stop illegal items from entering the stadium.
"A lot of the metal detectors have picked up people who've had pocketknives and that type of thing coming through. Those are not allowed," says Oestmann.
While University Police say they haven't had too many security issues with fans so far this year, with the cold weather expected Saturday, they will be taking extra steps to check coats and blankets.
"If it's a blanket rolled up we may ask them to unroll it so we can take a look at it. If it's a coat and it's cold outside, we may just ask them to take a look inside the pockets and maybe just open up your coat a little it so we can visually check that," says Oestmann.
As for the fans, the new security procedures get mixed reviews.
"I haven't really noticed it to be honest, it's pretty easy getting in and out," says Mikey Maynard.
"It's kind of annoying when you're waiting in a long line. It makes it a little more of a tedious process to have to go through and have to get out your bag," says Breeanna Ankerstjerne.
While the stadium may be safer with the heightened security, Oestmann says it takes more than just equipment.
"The most important security we're going to have is the fans. It's their eyes and ears that add that security that we've always enjoyed here at Nebraska," says Oestmann.
If you are planning on attending Saturday's game, here's a reminder of a few items to leave at home. Bookbags are not allowed as well as glass bottles or alcoholic beverages. Noise makers and video cameras are also off limits.
