LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A top water official from Kansas reasserted his state's intention to make sure Nebraska complies with the Republican River Compact.

That came this week during a meeting in southwest Nebraska. David Barfield of the Kansas Department of Agriculture spoke in Imperial before a group of nearly 200 farmers and other residents of the Republican River basin.

Over the past three years, Nebraska has used more than 100-thousand acre-feet of water over its allocation. Barfield said Kansas appreciates Nebraska's efforts to increase water going downstream, including limiting irrigation and retiring irrigated acres.

But he said Nebraska is falling short and appears poised to continue doing so in the next two years.

He declined to say what action Kansas might take in light of that.
