Not Guilty Pleas in Sigma Chi Hazing Cases

Seven members of the Sigma Chi fraternity at UNL pleaded not guilty to hazing, procuring alcohol for a minor, and other charges Friday.
They were arraigned in Lancaster County Court on charges stemming from an investigation into allegations of hazing brought by a former Sigma Chi pledge.
22-year-old Michael Classen and 19-year-old James Glover pleaded not guilty to hazing and procuring alcohol for a minor. Classen requested a jury trial. Hazing is a Class II misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in prison, a $1000 fine, or both. Procuring for a minor is a Class I misdemeanor, carrying up to 1 year in prison, a $1000 fine, or both.
22-year-old Kyle Humphrey did not appear but his attorney indicated he will plead not guilty to the same charges, plus an additional charge of theft by receiving.
21-year-old Jonathan Knudsen pleaded not guilty to hazing and requested a jury trial.
21-year-old Ian Dimka and 22-year-old Chris Wozniak pleaded not guilty to procuring alcohol for a minor. 19-year-old Samuel Bates entered a written not guilty plea for the same charge and requested a jury trial.
Each of the seven are scheduled to return to court in June.
The attorney for 20-year-old Keegan Anderson filed a motion to continue his arraignment until May 20. Anderson faces a charge of hazing, and third degree assault which is a Class I misdemeanor.
According to court documents, a freshman pledge reported at least four hazing incidents to UNL Police in February. The pledge claimed in one incident he was handcuffed, blindfolded, and sodomized by a stripper.
The lawyer for Michael Classen, John Berry, Jr., spoke to reporters after the arraignment. "Michael Classen is presumed innocent," Berry said. "We're looking forward to receiving the reports in this case and getting moving on it."
University of Nebraska Lincoln officials are conducting their own investigation and considering whether Sigma Chi fraternity will remain at UNL.
