All 222 surviving horses and burros rescued from a western Nebraska ranch have found new homes.
Authorities last month discovered many of the 211 horses and 11 burros on Jason Meduna's 3-Strikes Ranch emaciated and suffering from a variety of ailments. A total of 74 horses and burros were found dead at the ranch 22 miles south of Alliance.
Meduna made his first appearance in Morrill County Court in Bridgeport on Wednesday and had his preliminary hearing set for June 17. He faces 149 felony counts of abandonment and cruel animal neglect resulting in injury or death.
Jerry Finch is with Texas-based Horses for Habitat. He said the task of relocating the surviving animals was finished late last week.
He said the animals were spread among 15 states, and all are in good health.
