It's still rare to reach your 100th birthday, but did you know the odds are getting better? Today nearly 10 times more people will celebrate a century or more, compared to 40 years ago. The Social Security Administration estimates one in 50 women will someday turn 100 and one in 200 men will reach the 100-year milestone.
Jerry Lameson isn't just living at 100-years-old, he's living well. The Page, Nebraska native just experienced an incredible once-in-a-lifetime birthday celebration. But don't think his gifts included the fountain of youth because he's already found it...at the bowling alley in O'Neill.
Jerry Lameson isn't exactly sure when he started bowling, "About 60 or 70 years ago," he says. All he knows for sure is that he loves it. "I just like to see that ball go in there and get a strike." And Jerry is no stranger to the strikes. There was a time not so long ago that Jerry beat the owner of the bowling alley in 3 straight games. Jerry recalls, "His wife is workin' the counter here and she's like this 90-year-old guy is beatin my husband acting like she was crying."
This much is clear, when Jerry's hittin' the lanes, it isn't just for the exercise, "I try to beat everybody that I'm bowlin' against!"
Jerry still enjoys going head to head. Jerry Winkler is the owner of O'Neill Lanes and he says Jerry still has the fire to win, "The competitive nature is still there, he wants to quit bowlin' and I said no, no, no. You can't quit. You don't really want to quit do ya?" Jerry Lameson responds, "I don't want to but I'm gonna have to I'll fall on my face out there someday."
Here are Jerry's keys to longevity, "Be sure and brush your teeth and say hello whenever you meet somebody on the street...that's about the two main things."
Jerry had a fabulous birthday celebration but he was quick to point out that the only way it could've been better is if his dear wife Eva would have been there to help celebrate. She passed away 12 years ago, less than two weeks from what would have been their 70th anniversary.
