A displaced Lancaster County couple is picking up the pieces after a fire ravaged their home and belongings.

Robert Parham had just gotten back from a fishing trip in Canada and was enjoying his final day of vacation, running errands Monday afternoon, when he came home to find his house in rural Denton in flames.

"I saw the smoke on the way home from Crete and I got up here and the whole place was in flames," said Parham.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's department says the fire did more than $150,000 in damage between the house and garage, which is a complete loss. Robert says the inside of the home sustained major smoke damage and will most likely need to be completely redone.

Robert says it could have been worse though - his wife and pets were inside when the fire started.

"She was inside and heard a window pop and when she came out the door I was one the phone with the fire department," said Parham as he described the charred scene.

Luckily no one was injured.

The Lancaster County Sheriffs Department says an overheated car recently parked in the garage likely started on fire, spreading to the garage and eventually the house.

"Its tough ya know we're basically starting over. We're just working through it right now," said Parham.

For now the couple will stay in a hotel and plan to stay in a camper on their property during the months ahead.

Tuesday workers repaired parts of the roof to keep out the weather. Just the first of many steps for the Parhams in putting the pieces of their life back together.

"We just do what Nebraskans do. We'll put it back together."
