More Nebraska farmers are joining Twitter.

The online site allows you to send quick messages--or tweets--to people's computers or cell phones.

Farmer Brandon Hunnicutt has taken his shop talk global with Twitter.

"It started out this year during planting," he said. "When it was so cool out I was tweeting 'ok, here's what the soil temperature is. I don't think I'll be planting for another couple of weeks.'"

Farmers aren't just tweeting about the last unwanted rain.

Hunnicutt says the site is a way to combat misconceptions about farming and start a dialogue with people who are unfamiliar with Nebraska agriculture.

"We want to make sure that we educate people on what goes on on the good side of animal agriculture, what we're doing as farmers to help that industry, said Hunnicutt. "[There] might be people who are just flat out against ethanol and so, ok, here's some of those misconceptions."

Sometimes Hunnicutt turns to his fellow farmers for a quick tweet of information.

"[You're] seeing something out in the field, do a quick tweet on that, then someone else responds 'oh yeah, here's what I've done to correct that' or here's a new update for your software you might need to utilize on your tractor," he said.

Hunnicutt says because Twitter is so quick and easy, he hopes more farmers will join the site.

"We need to make sure that we have a presence out there to push back when we need to push back and promote when we need to promote," he said. "I think it's going to be, the whole social media thing is going to be a useful tool for many years to come."

Hunnicutt says he knows of only about five farmers that use Twitter in the state.

But, he says it's a relatively new tool for Nebraska's agriculture industry.

About seven million people use Twitter worldwide, according to Nielson Online.
