A 60 year old Waverly woman lost $58,000 after falling for a Jamaican lottery scam.
Sheriff Terry Wagner said the woman thought she was going to win $11.4 million and the $58,000 was needed to free up her winnings.
Wagner said the woman received a mailing on May 17 telling her she had won. She called a phone number on the letter and the scam began to pick up steam.
Wagner said the woman talked to multiple people in multiple states and in Jamaica, who convinced her to send a number of money transfers to different locations over a couple of weeks.
Eventually Wagner said the woman's daughter became worried and called authorities. Wagner said investigators talked to the woman, telling her she was a victim, but she continued to send the cash. at some point Wagner said she finally realized the truth when she didn't get any of her winnings back.
Wagner said deputies have been working with the Jamaican Consolate and authorities in multiple states trying to track the scammers.
Wagner said there are three things you should look for when it comes to lottery scams like this one.
First, if you did not enter a lottery, you will not win one.
Second, foreign lotteries are illegal in the United States.
Third, it is illegal for an agency to require a winner of a prize to pay in order to receive their compensation.
