The National Weather Service confirms two tornadoes touched down in the state Tuesday night.

Officials say an EF-0 tornado touched down near Assumption, about 10 miles southwest of Hastings.

That means the storm had wind speeds of 65 to 85 miles per hour.

It wouldn't take much to wipe out Assumption, but after surviving a tornado the 12 home village is left mostly just picking up branches.

"Lots of tree damage. No uprooted trees, but lots and lots of dirt on everything," said Assumption resident Sharol Mousel.

The minimal damage wasn't the outcome residents expected after seeing the tornado.

"Just like a big swirly thing and made of mostly rain, but still pretty scary," said Taylor Link of the tornado.

Link is visiting his Grandma Mousel from Georgia, and says he's never seen a tornado before.

"I said, you know we need to take shelter so we came over to the Assumption Parish Hall," said Mousel. "We had one of the weather spotters and he came to the door and he said, 'you people stay here and you go down in the back where there's no flying glass,' because that's when the tornado was on the ground."

Looking to the east on Assumption Road locals say they saw the tornado.

Eye witnesses and experts agree, the damage could have been a lot worse.

"Since it did go right over the town basically, yeah, they were very fortunate," said Rick Ewald, science and operations officer for the National Weather Service. "The main damage was to a couple of center pivots that looks like it took out anywhere from 4 to 7 sections."

Also, a nearby farm lost a chicken coop and suffered a broken window to the house.

As the community picks up and repairs minor damage, residents say they're just glad every one is safe.

"[We're] very fortunate," said Mousel.

Officials say just because the damage was minimal in this instance doesn't mean a storm like this can't cause major damage, so it's always a good idea to seek shelter during a storm.
