Westbound traffic on Interstate-80 near Waco was backed up for several miles Thursday afternoon due to the crash of a pickup truck and camper.
According to Lt. Paul Vrbka with the York County Sheriff's office, a couple from Grand Junction, CO, was driving west on I-80 pulling a camper behind their pickup truck when the driver, Carol Benson, fell asleep at the wheel. Vrbka said Benson drove into the median and collided with a bridge.
Vrbka said the pickup is totaled, but the camper is not.
Vrbka said Benson and her husband Roger Benson were both transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Vrbka said both were released Thursday.
"Luckily nobody got killed, and we didn't have a chain reaction with other traffic," said Vrbka.
Although traffic backed up for more than an hour in the westbound lanes of I-80, no other vehicles were involved. And Vrbka said the Bensons were wearing seat belts.
Around 1:00 p.m., Interstate-80 traffic was being diverted near the Utica interchange. Only westbound traffic was affected.
