Day Three

Today was fantastic!

This morning we left the our hotel in Anchorage and headed for Whittier, Alaska for our 26-Glacier Cruise.

On the way, we stopped by a bakery that sells the best cinnamon rolls in Alaska and we all indulged!

As we continued our journey to Whittier, we had a few wildlife sightings. First, we saw some dall sheep standing along the mountains. It was as if they were posing there just for us. We also spotted a few eagles as they soared through the sky.

While we were all excited to see that, it was no match for what we were about to encounter. Once we arrived in Whittier, we boarded the Klondike Express and began our cruise through the waters of the Prince William Sound.

Not only did we see some amazing waterfalls (snow melts) along the way, we were able to witness rafts of sea otters in their habitat right in the water. As we cruised by, the sea mammels swam, flipped and showed off for us over an over again. We all fell in love with them and couldn't believe how cute the creatures turned out to be! We also saw a few seals and yes - there was even a black bear sighting or two - but it was from a distance!

The highlight of the day, however, was the up close and personal view of the glaciers.
They were absolutely breath taking! They were so grand that most of us just stood in awe of the amazing, blue ice! We even had a chance to watch giant slabs of the ice crash into the sea. They call this calving and it was quite an impressive sight - and we had the opportunity to witness these wonders again and again - until before we knew it - it was time to turn around.

As we headed back to the port, the crew brought us warm chocolate chip cookies, and just when we thought we had seen it all - we found ourselves moving toward a huge colony of Black-Legged Kittiwake birds. They flew around in unison for quite some time. We were entertained, but our guide told us they were flying around to try and confuse the eagles - and avoid becoming dinner. Whatever the reason - it was fun to watch.

It was a wonderful end to a wonderful adventure.

Tonight...we had fresh cod for dinner - mmmm mmm.

Seriously if you can afford it, this is a great way to see Awesome Alaska. I lived there for 6 years and didn't experience half of what y'all will see.

If you get back to Anchorage with time on your hands look for the Alaska museum (Frequently Native American and local Crafts people are set up there), Sleeping Lady Mountain and The Snow Goose Inn. Great Atmosphere and and salmon cooked over a smokey Adler Fire. MMMM Good.

Serese- Have a wonderful trip. We took a cruise in 2005, Vancouver to Whittier/Anchorage. AMAZING. I must warn you that we brought home a little souvenir from our trip... We can't wait to do it again, without adding to the family!

Serese: I just started using KOLN/KGIN web site as my home page. (Got tired of the Lincoln Journal Star's heavily biased "news" reporting.) I saw the link to your blog, and since we are seriously considering an Alaskan cruise next year, I thought I'd check it out. I didn't see the first two postings (assuming there were two others) and couldn't find a link to them. However, it sounds like you're having fun. If you don't mind, could you tell us what kind of cruise/trip you're on? We're thinking of a cruise with some land excursions sprinkled in with the port stops.
