More than 25 participants took to Lincoln's streets to protest election results in Iran and to encourage Iranians to fight for their rights.
Protestors at 14th and O St. and at 15th and K St. were waving signs and chanting free Iran as Lincoln drivers passed by.
Nver Hasratyan, organizer of the protest, said its important to pay attention to international affairs not only for human rights awareness, but also to become more educated in general.
"There are people out there who are dying, they are losing their freedom, their liberty and their human rights and we want people to not be ignorant towards this. We do not want people to judge the entire Iranian nation based on a dictator, Ahdimijiad because people are innocent victims of his dictorial policies," Hasratyan said.
The protest was designed to help the community raise awareness about the chaos in Iran and to help the public better understand why its happening now.
"The community is not as aware, which is what really offends me a little bit because we have time for Starbucks coffee, we have time for popcorn, watching the games, computer games, for anything we have time but we dont have time to keep track of the international news. And then when 9/11 happens, we are all shocked why it happened. No one knew it happened because we don't keep track of the international news," Hasratyan said
A candlelight memorial service will be held Tuesday June 23rd at 9:00 p.m. at 12th and R St after the Jazz in June celebration.
Another protest is planned for Wednesday, June 24th from 4:00p.m. till 6:00 p.m. at 15th and O St. outside of the federal building.

Thank you for covering us in the news. I was glad to see the media involvement in this which would be even more helpful as we increase awareness of the Iranian situation in the community. I am glad to see the correct time and location announced for our upcoming events, because in Lincoln Journal Star the time and place for the second rally is mentioned under the candlelight event which are actually two separate events. So, there is going to be confusion.
