Monday's heat didn't stop volunteers from lending a hand to help move Gibbon Public Schools into a brand new building, but it did mean starting early so they could end early.

Custodial staff started at 6:00 a.m. and volunteers arrive at 7:00 a.m.

Eight days into a move Gibbon Public Schools budgeted a month for, half the building is already full.

Superintendent Larry Witt says volunteers like students Nicole Treadway and Micah Stall are the reason.

"I just volunteered so that we could get all this done before it got too hot," said Stall.

"It's a huge undertaking, but thanks to the community in many different ways this process is well ahead of schedule," said Witt.

It takes volunteers and loaned equipment to move into the nearly $18 million building, complete with auditorium and improved food preparation stations.

"I like the gyms so it'll be fun to play in there next year," said Stall.

Treadway says she's looking forward to the little things like "the air conditioning and all the big space."

"The quality of the climate here will be vastly improved. We had areas of the building we used to call Sierra East in the fall and the spring it would get real warm real early," said Witt. "If you're more comfortable in your work environment, climate, you're able to focus better. Your retention is better."

That means the 100 degree heat these movers are facing won't distract the students that will learn there.

School starts August 17th.

Witt says he hopes to have the move completed long before the original July 15th deadline.

The new building will house all grades of Gibbon Public.

The school started moving furniture last week and communication devices like computers and phones earlier this month.
