Day 7
It may be June, but today we got in the holiday spirit with a trip to the Santa Claus House in North Pole, Alaska. As it should be - it's located right on 101 St. Nicholas Drive. The
Santa Claus house is filled with any and everything related to Christmas. While we were there we saw Santa, his real live reindeer and some of us made sure our children, grandchildren and the special kids in our lives got a personalized letter from the North Pole this Christmas. I can't wait until Tyler and Jordan get theirs!
Although we hated to leave Jolly Old Saint Nick, we had to get back on the road. Our next stop was Rika's Roadhouse- where we got the chance to see how folks lived in the early 1900's. The ladies were happy to try on all the fur coats. The men cringed hoping none of us wanted to actually buy one.
Our day-long trek continued on the Alaska Highway until we arrived in Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory in Canada. It's a hotel literally in the middle of nowhere. There was no television, no phone service and no stores nearby - it was just us and the fine people in the small town. They served us up a family-style dinner and put on a fantastic musical dinner show about the history of the Alaska Highway. The food and the show was great, the mosquitoes were biting and the twin beds in our room were fitting as we ended our evening in Beaver Creek.
Day 8
Today we continued our adventure on the Alaska Highway. The roads were a bit bumpy, but we did see two moose crossing the highway! I was glad for the sighting because there were only a few of us left in the group who hadn't spotted a moose along the road yet - and yes, I was one of them (somehow I kept missing them).
We spent most of day on the road - but made a few stops along the way including Kluane National Park and the site one of the original railroads.
We are now in Whitehorse, YT. It's a really cute town. Some of us went out to eat at the Klondike Ribs and Salmon Restaurant. It's a place the locals recommended. We had halibut fish and chips. Boy was it good!
Now, it's time for bed. It's been a long day.
I'll be in touch,
Serese

Serese, you are causing chills and tears! We lived in Fairbanks, Skagway and Klawock for a total of 15 years. Your blogs are bringing so many wonderful memories to life. I can close my eyes and be right there with you...the scenery is out of this world, the dog sled teams, Mt McKinley, Discovery III was only "The Discovery" when we were there, the wildlife, not to forget the food. We loved every minute of every day there - even the Fairbanks flood in 1967 and the Good Friday earthquake in 1962 or 63 (oh, oh). We didn't really "love" the flood and earthquake, but they were experiences to go along with all of the many others that we will never forget.
