When it comes to understanding the whims of Nebraska weather, Ken Dewey knows how to "get 'r done." So, when Larry the Cable Guy went in search of someone who could "weatherproof" his July 4 performance at Memorial Stadium, it's not surprising that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln climatologist got the gig.

Not that Dewey claims he'll be able to guarantee good weather for the comedian's performance, which will be taped for later airing on Comedy Central. But he'll use his expertise at a portable weather station on site to closely monitor conditions and keep the production company informed of developments.

A crew of about 100 will be on hand to record the performance, and the investment in both the live performance and the taping will be about $1 million, so the insurance company providing coverage for the event wanted producer Alan Blomquist to hire a weather expert to provide historic climate data and monitor the weather the evening of the performance.

Blomquist contacted the mayor's office, which recommended Dewey, of UNL's School of Natural Resources.

"This may be the most unusual weather and climate task I have had in my 30 years at UNL, " Dewey said. "This gives new meaning to 'applied climate science.' I'm up for it."

In addition to Dewey's high-tech services and an insurance policy, producers are relying on a more traditional backup plan. Sunday, July 5, is the rain date.
