JaNeane Dodson isn't afraid to roll up her sleeves and get a little dirt under her fingernails.
"If you can pull a weed, you can be out here," Dodson said.
Every week she and a handful of others volunteer for Garden Gab.
"We all love the gardens, especially in Lincoln," said Dodson. "We're proud of them."
It's a budding "learn and do" program at a variety of Capital City community gardens.
"Volunteerism is so important and because the parks department, you know, everybody has to cut employees," said Dodson. "They need the help and this is one thing we can really do to contribute to our city."
Garden Gab organizers and volunteers use their green thumbs to make flowers flourish. Now, they're hoping they will have the same skill to make the program grow as well.
"I think one of the beauties of the program is the volunteers," said Steve Nosal, a Lincoln Horticulturalist. "With the tough budget problems we've had over the last couple of years, so when I have seven people show up like I did today, it really makes a big difference."
A difference, Garden Gabbers said the community can feel.
"These gardens create a visual silence," Nosal said. "People around them, you can just see them kind of fall back and relax."
And it's all thanks for a few volunteers, who don't mind getting their hands dirty, and hope to inspire others to do the same.
