Nebraska's chief medical officer disagrees with guardians who say their loved ones died partly because of the stress of being moved out of the Beatrice State Developmental Center.
Dr. Joann Schaefer said on Wednesday that she understands concerns that the move may have been a factor, but she doesn't believe it contributed to the deaths.
Five of 47 medically fragile people moved out of the center in January have died. Schaefer ordered the move following the death of an 18-year-old. Officials have acknowledged that the young woman received inadequate care.
Former resident Claudia Wright died Sunday.
Wright's guardian, Claudie Sires, says Wright became quiet after the move. Sires says she's certain the move contributed to Wright's death.
