Authorities say a 23-year-old Hastings woman is dead after she was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle.
Adams County Sheriff Gregg Magee says Kelly M. Gilbert was driving an ATV on a private road southwest of Juniata when she struck a ditch and was ejected into trees.
Magee says Gilbert suffered head trauma. She was not wearing a helmet.
The accident was reported around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Gilbert was flown to a Lincoln hospital, where she was pronounced dead early Saturday.
Authorities continue to investigate. Magee says based on a statement from a witness, alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

Let those who ride decide,I refuse to wear a helmet. When I retire in Arizona then I'll buy my next Harley. No helmet laws in Arizona like the states around us.

Sounds like "T" thinks it is impractical to wear a real D.O.T. helmet.Maybe while "t" and "t"'s buddies are bar hopping on thier "cruisers" and wearing thier fake dot labeled "skid lids" they feel invincable. That would give "T" and "T"'s buddies a Darwin Award?

Our Communist helmet law is a bunch of B.S.Go back to 1989 and see how much revenue was lost when they passed this law.Registrations were down about a third in this state, what next Jet Skiis so there is more drownings. We always have to be different than the other bordering states.

Helmet laws? sounds like a good idea to me. They are no different than a motorcycle, and drinking and driving is also against the law. Maybe some people need to have a refresher course on DUI's

I really don't think banning them is the answer. Proper training and not drinking while driving would help a lot. If people use them correctly they are no more dangerous than any other vehicle. Grace-you can't just out law everything thatt is dangerous...there would be NOTHING left.

How very sad!! I feel for her family. We are hearing more and more about these kind of accidents. Please be careful. I think these four wheelers are so dangerous. I wish they would out law them. We don't need anymore deaths from these things. She was a young girl who thought she was having fun! We're going to hear of more and more deaths from these. there have been 2 just this week. How very sad

My brother came upon this accident but it was apparent that no one could help. He understood that today would have been her 23rd birthday. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kellys' family and friends. May God wrap his healing harms around them and bring them comfort. How very tragic and sad.
