Lincoln Drivers are being turned away from the DMV after a power surge shuts down their systems.

The Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday morning that all of it's drivers license services are suspended until further notice.
The DMV was poised to begin their brand new drivers license system Monday, featuring new identity protection with special UV images, but thanks power interruptions Sunday night, DMV Director Beverly Neth says the new system will be delayed, along with all other drivers license requests, in the meantime.
According to Russ Reno with Lincoln Electric System, someone released Mylar balloons which got tangled in the power lines causing short "blinks" or interruptions in the power.
Douglas and Travis Stewart traveled from Greenwood, Nebraska to renew Travis's driver's permit, but were surprised when they were turned away.
"It's a little inconvenient because we drove from Greenwood, Nebraska, which is like 20 miles away. But you know, things happen," Douglas said.
Barbara Walter wanted to get her new adult license after turning 18, and was also disappointed.
"I took the day off of work and everything, so I have to take it off again in a week or two to get it," Walter said.
But while DMV customers are frustrated, Neth says so is the department.
"We'll have to re-install software on every computer we have out there, every system we have out there, which numbers over 200. We have 200 pieces of hardware out there, put the system into each one of those, and ultimately run test records through each one of those, so it's kind of a time consuming process that we're going to have to go through," Neth said.
A delay that won't help if you're license is set to expire, and if you waited until the last minute, Neth says that's on your shoulders.
"If your document expires, it expires. You do have a 90 day renewal period, that's really your grace period. On the backside, there's nothing I can issue for anyone today," said Neth.
A problem 16-year-olds like Cara Clements hope is corrected soon, "I'm kind of upset because I was really excited to get it, and now I can't get it," said Clements.
Now she'll have to change her plans, along with everyone else.
"I was actually going to go to the movies as soon as I got my license with some of my friends," Clements said.
Neth says no equipment was damaged in the power surge, and no personal information was leaked. She hopes the system will be ready to go again by Wednesday.
In the meantime, she says the county treasurers are still available for other transactions like titling issuance, registration, and sales tax collection.

Too bad the DMV haven't heard of surge supressors. How much much did they save by not properly protecting all of this new equipment. Three days down, guess those savings are gone now. Poor planning on the DMV's part.
It boggles my mind that they think sending drivers' licenses in the mail is going to help protect privacy and identity theft. It is better to be given the driver's license when you go to get it. There is mail theft out there too.
No backup system? Wow.
