A Seward County official says the fatal shooting of a 10-year-old boy at an RV park near Milford appears to be an accident, and charges are not expected.
The boy is identified as 10-year-old Michael Tunnell lll of McCalla, Alabama
The Seward County Sheriff's Department has confirmed a 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed Wednesday at 1:47 p.m. in Riverside Park near Milford.
"There's no other word to describe it other than a tragedy," said Chief Deputy Dan Hejl with the Seward County Sheriff's Office. "It's something that did not need to happen. This 10-year-old should still be playing right now instead of deceased."
Authorities say a 13-year-old boy from Oklahoma accidentally shot the 10-year-old in the torso. Authorities say the 13-year-old had been showing the other boy his father's gun in their RV when it went off.
The 13-year-old reportedly got help from a neighbor, and the two performed CPR until emergency crews arrived.
Authorities say the 10-year-old was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m. at the Seward Hospital. The 13-year-old was uninjured and was not taken into custody.
"Lock up your firearms, don't keep them loaded," said Hejl. "The possibility somebody breaking into your house and you needing that firearm is far less than the real possibility of a juvenile or someone else mishandling that fire arm and causing a tragedy such as this."
