Genetic tests are being performed on a couple who say they are the parents of an infant legally abandoned on July 20 at an Alliance hospital under the state's safe-haven law.
He was the first infant left at Nebraska hospital since the state revised its safe-haven law last fall.
Under it, a person won't be prosecuted for any crime based solely on the act of leaving an infant at a state-licensed hospital.
The original state law had no age limit, which the Legislature remedied later by adding an age limit of 30 days.
State officials had been looking for the baby boy's parents so important information about his medical background could be gathered. Officials aren't sure when the tests results will be known.
They say the boy is in foster care.
