All newborns in Nebraska should be tested for drugs to help identify children at risk for abuse and neglect.

That is one preliminary recommendation from the child abuse task force, a panel appointed by Gov. Mike Johanns.

The governor says testing all newborns for drugs isn't a bad idea, but he says mandatory drug testing may drive new mothers away from pre-natal care.

Social worker Pat Kreifels of Visinet Incorporated says he's all for the task force's recommendation to add more social workers. He says more field workers may help reduce cases of abuse and neglect in the state.

The task force hopes to finalize their recommendations when they hold their December meeting.
