Building Hike

(AP) - The building boom in Kearney has reached an unprecedented level.

The $80.1 million in building permits issued so far in 2003 crushed the record of $67.4 million in permits issued in 1998.

Boosted by record increases in the number and value of commercial and residential projects, Kearney's building permit totals are $53.2 million ahead of 2002, according to figures released by the Economic Development Council of Buffalo County.

This year's total is greater than the combined $63 million in permits issued in 2001 and '02.

One reason for the large jump is an increase in commercial construction activity. Twenty-five commercial permits valued at a combined $31.8 million were issued through November.
