Omaha police on Monday identified the body of a woman found in Carter Lake as Michelle Harlan, 17.
Police are treating her death as a homicide. Police said Harlan was at eight months pregnant, but no information on her death was released.
A Carter Lake resident observing wildlife in Levi Carter Park discovered the body about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Hers is the first homicide of a pregnant woman in Nebraska since the state passed fetal legislation. The law calls for her killer to be prosecuted for both her death and the death of her unborn child.
At the time it was signed in 2002, the bill was met with opposition from pro-choice groups who did not want to have the state define at what stage life begins.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 444-5656 or Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP.
