Nebraska Regent Wants to Keep Position Secret

By: Associated Press

A University of Nebraska regent wants to keep the names of finalists for the president's position secret.

Regent Kent Schroeder of Kearney says state law making finalists names public should be changed.

He says releasing the names of finalists could negatively impact on the number of candidates who apply. Schroeder says some may fear repercussions from their current employer if they know they are seeking a job.

Schroeder is looking for a state senator willing to introduce a bill changing the law. So far, Schroeder says he has not gotten any takers.

Schroeder's idea is opposed by government watchdog group Common Cause Nebraska and the media of Nebraska. Both groups say the public should know who is in contention to become president of the university.
