Democrat and Republican state party leaders say this year's congressional race just got more exciting. Congressman Bereuter's decision not to run the first time the first time in 25 years an incumbent will not be in the race for the first district seat.

"This opportunity opens up more of a dialog between what elections are supposed to be about," said Heath Mello, deputy director of the state Democratic party.

"It's going to be something that's going to wake us up and be more of a challenge in 2004," Chris Peterson with the state Republican party said saying there are many qualified candidates which will give voters an exciting election.

So far the following have expressed interest in the First District Congressional seat: Curt Bromm, speaker of the Legislature, state senator Matt Connealy, Lt. Governor Dave Heineman, Democrat Janet Stewart and Republican Bob Van Valkenburg.
