Norfolk police are investigating a homicide-suicide involving a Norfolk couple who were in court last week over a domestic abuse protection order.
Police say 40-year-old James Gooch apparently shot his 41-year-old wife, Katherine Gooch, at their home Wednesday night.
Thursday morning, the Stanton County sheriff's office reports Gooch's body was found in a wooded area northeast of the Pilger rest area. Sheriff Mike Unger says the death appeared to be a self-inflicted hanging.
Madison County Court records show the couple had been going through domestic problems and Gooch had sought the protection order, claiming on several occasions the couple had argued and she struck him.
But on Monday, Gooch wrote a brief letter to the judge stating he had reconsidered and no longer wanted the order.
The couple had three children, ages 13, 12 and ten.
