Smoking Ban Vetoed

By: Associated Press
Updated: Thu 3:48 PM, Dec 18, 2003

Lincoln Mayor Coleen Seng vetoed the city's new smoking ban Thursday, just three days after it was adopted by the City Council.

Seng said in a letter to the council that the ordinance was not fair.

As originally proposed, the ordinance would have banned smoking in most all workplaces.

It would have also made Lincoln the first city in Nebraska to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.

But the amended version would have allowed smoking inside bars where food makes up less than 60% of total sales.

Seng said that was unfair to some businesses.
