Grand Island Police Change Patrol System

Until six weeks ago, Grand Island police officers had no idea what areas of the city they would be patrolling when they showed up to work.

They would have different supervisors everyday and worked with different officers. Now, a new system has been put in place to create continuity in the police force.

Teams of officers have been created. Each team permanently patrols either the north or south part of Grand Island. The officers have the same supervisor every shift and work with the same team members every day.

It has allowed them to develop a familiarity with the areas they patrol. Officer Craig Dvorak says its allowed him to locate problem areas around his patrol area and keep a closer eye on things that look out of place in neighborhoods.
