Inmate Sexual Assault Trial Nearing an End

The trial for Grand Island City Councilman Fred Whitesides is wrapping up today with one more witness' testimony for the prosecution.

Whitesides took the stand Wednesday and denied that he sexually assaulted a female inmate while working as a corrections officer.

The woman testified earlier in the week that Whitesides touched her in a sexual manner on two occasions while she was an inmate at the jail in November and December of 2001.

Whitesides is on trial for two counts of felony sexual assault on a female inmate.

He was charged on April 11, 2002 and was fired from his corrections officer position eight days later.

The state rested its case until Thursday, when the prosecution is scheduled to call one more witness from out of the state.
