Weekend Fire Causes Damage

A fire erupted in a hay shed near Bennet Saturday, and kept fire crews battling the blaze for almost 12 hours.

Authorities say the fire did more than $635,000 worth of damage, destroying 4,000 alfalfa bales, two combines and an implement sprayer.

By the time crews responded to the fire at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, the 60-by-180-foot shed was fully engulfed in flames.

Eldon Schroder, assistant chief of the Bennet Rural Fire Department, said the fire was probably one of the biggest he has seen in his 17 years on the job.

No one was injured in the fire and investigators still aren't sure what ignited the blaze. Authorities said they have ruled out arson.

Bennet was just one of ten rural fire departments that fought the fire Saturday.

The burned alfalfa was spread out on a nearby field where it continued to smolder into Sunday.
