Authorities say a Valentine rancher was shot and killed after the man pointed a gun at police officers.

Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott says 56-year-old Gary Connot was found hiding in a closet in the Valentine home of his estranged wife, Linda.

In January, he put a pistol to his wife's face and threatened to kill her. He was out on bond, pending sentencing in October.

Scott says Linda Connot called police around 4 Tuesday morning after hearing a noise in a bedroom closet.

Officers found Gary Connot in the closet and ordered him out.

Scott says Connot pulled a gun and raised it at the officers, so one of them fired once, killing Connot.

Because Connot died while being taken into custody, a grand jury will investigate.

He went up before a new judge, his third time, and his bail was reduced to an amount he was able to pay. Despite telling people while he was out on bond that he was "not going back to jail", and continued to make threatening statements, he remained free. It was stressful to see how much pain he was in...

You're right, that judge should never have let him out, but then there were lots of mistakes made, such as no professional enforcement of getting him mental help. He had a mental status exam that cited him as a danger to himself or others, yet it was not followed up on. That was his third time before a judge, it was a new judge, and he reduced Gary's bond to a payable amount, rather than the millions it initially was. Numerous family members tried to get him help, but we couldn't force him; only the courts could have done that...and they failed!

He didn't explain his behavior. They were too torn apart to go see him. He wouldn't have wanted them to go through that, but at that point in his life he had lost everything but God...and HE decided Gary had too much to handle! And there you have it...

When he first threatened his wife and was caught, etc., how did he explain his behavior to his daughters? Would he have wanted that same behavior shown to them? This was more of an ego driven type of behavior than anything else. Like the old saying goes, live by the gun, die by the gun.

That's a judge for you, let someone out that has made threasts toward someone's life with a weapon!! you know though if you get a DUI; insurance goes up, fines, loose license, possibly loose job. Write a bad check you have to put your picture in the paper, take financial classes, public scrutenty. Seems like we're going in the wrong direction!!!

Why was this man out on bond after he was found guilty of using a deadly weapon to commit a felony, terroristic threats and false imprisonment in the January incident? I'm very thank full that his ex-wife was not harmed.
