A 22-year-old Omaha man has been sentenced to 32 to 37 years in prison for the shooting of a two-year-old in August 2002.

Demetrius Nelson pleaded no contest last fall to second-degree murder for the death of Curtavius "C.J." Boykins and to using a deadly weapon.

"I'm sorry," Nelson said before being escorted in handcuffs from the courtroom Wednesday.

The child's mother, Nutuanda Yates, told Douglas County District Judge Richard Spethman she could forgive Nelson, but that she wished he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

Nelson will be eligible for parole in 16 years.

The boy was at a birthday party with relatives at South Terrace Apartments when Nelson fired into a crowd, hitting the boy and a woman holding the toddler's hand.

Police said some of Nelson's fellow gang members stepped beyond gang allegiances to identify Nelson as the gunman in the case.
