Family, friends and community members gathered at First Plymouth Congregational Church Thursday for the funeral of former state Sen. Ron Raikes.
Speakers at the funeral talked less about Raikes' unexpected death and instead told anecdotal stories about his extraordinary life.
While the former senator made great achievements on the legislative floor, it's his accomplishments in education that will continue for future generations.
He served in the legislature from 1997 until 2008, during which time he made great strides in education. He was chair of the Education Committee for eight years, and passed early childhood education legislation, helped reorganized school district structures in the state and developed the Douglas-Sarpy County Learning Community.
Former state Sen. Ron Raikes died in a farming accident this past Saturday, September 6. He was 66 years old.
Celebrations of Raikes' life aren't over. You can help contribute to his dedication to education by sending donations to the Ron Raikes Memorial Learning Community Scholarship, which benefits children in the Omaha area.
Sen. Greg Adams of York will accept the donations and turn them over to Raikes' memorial. You may mail donations to: Sen. Greg Adams, District 24, Room 1107, ATTN: Ron Raikes Memorial Learning Community Scholarship, P.O. Box 94604, State Capitol, Lincoln, NE 68509 or call: (402) 471-2756.
His family has a second memorial for the Clear Creek Memorial Sculpture.
