Terry Responds to Union Address

Representative Lee Terry called Tuesday's State of the Union address a very tough speech that answered President Bush's critics.

Among those much critiqued topics was the federal No Child Left Behind act. That act has been characterized by some as setting high but under funded goals for schools in meeting the needs of the nation's students.

Terry said bush did a good job of stressing why he brought this concept to Congress.

However, Senator Ben Nelson said few stood to applaud Bush's words on No Child Left Behind.

Nelson said that reserved response was a reaction to serious concerns among states on how to financially meet the standards set by the act.

But Nelson noted that the speech lacked the partisan rancor one might expect during an election year.

He said he felt the address was more of a conciliatory tone than many had expected.
