Sending a certified letter would no longer be the only way to let a public official know what a recall effort has begun under a bill heard Friday by the Legislature's Government Committee.
Under current law, if the person targeted never picks up the letter, the recall process would stop.
That has never happened, but the bill is designed to close the loophole.
In addition to certified mail, the proposal would allow for the county sheriff to deliver notice or for notice to simply be mailed to the official's home address.
Those are the same procedures for notifying a person of a lawsuit.
The bill is by Lincoln Senator DiAnna Schimek.
