Former Ammunition Load Line Burned

By: Associated Press

An amber-gray cloud that made its way over Grand Island by midday Tuesday wasn't a sign of more winter weather. It was a sign that the burning of Load Line three at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant west of town was well underway.

The burning of the three-quarter-mile-long line was originally scheduled for Monday but was delayed because of the snow. Tuesday's 11 a.m. start time was moved up to take advantage of the clear skies. The first of three detonations was set off at 10:29 a.m. By about 10:50 a.m., the entire line was ablaze.

The load line was used to manufacture explosives for World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The buildings were destroyed to dispose of the explosive residue left in areas such as pipes and floorboards.

In his role overseeing the project, Mark Vess said Load Line Five is all that remains. It will be destroyed sometime next year.
